ABOUT CORFU
Corfu is the most Northerly Island in the Ionian chain, certainly the greenest, it is arguably the most beautiful of the Greek Islands enjoying hot summers without stifling heat and mild winters.
The Island was one of the first places to open up to mass tourism because of this and became enormously popular because of Gerald Durrell’s book “My Family and Other Animals” in which he amusingly describes the oddities of his boyhood upbringing on the Island among his eccentric family and their friends. We recognize so much of the warm nature and culture of the people in that book set before WW2 present still today.
Corfu is a classic tourist destination. It appeals as a place of outstanding natural beauty, as an Island with a rich cultural history, with wonderful architecture reflecting many influences. The food constantly surpasses our expectations and the wine is delicious.
The atmosphere of a late evening stroll along the Spinada in Corfu Town on a Saturday night has to be experienced first hand, its like a spontaneous overflow of fellowship.
The swallows wheel overhead and flit across the pool in the early evening, later the fireflies dance magically in the darkness punctuated only by an amazing show of stars and moon.
About Arillas
The North West of Corfu is largely unspoiled by mass tourism and still allows you to get an authentic taste of the warm Corfiot people and their culture.
It also enjoys the most fabulous sunsets.
This side of the Island has in our opinion the best (Blue Flag) beaches on the whole of Corfu which are all sandy, gently shelved, calm and ideal for children.
Arillas is a small low key tourist resort only about 40 Minutes (50 Euro by Taxi) drive from the Airport at Kerkyra ( Corfu Town) which has most of the facilities of any modern European city.
Arillas is compact, you will not need a car to get around although it would be a shame not to hire one for a few days on a longer stay to explore the fabulous scenery of Corfu.
Around Arillas there are water sports a plenty, Wind Surfing, Sailing, Scuba, even pedalos as well as horse riding and organized walking.
There are numerous excursions available from the resort centre by bus and water including a great water park “Aqualand” as well as Golf in the Ropa Valley.
The business’s in Arillas are largely owned by people who live in Arillas, which is unusual for most of the coastal resorts. Because they are bringing up families here there is no desire to appeal to mass tourist market and its excesses.
You will find a very friendly, genuine welcome from the most amazingly thoughtful and kind people. The seafront has a pleasant number of Tavernas that serve superb homemade food of both Greek and International styles.
There are a few bars and even a bit of a disco. If you fancied a slightly louder night then Sidari with its Clubs and Bars is only 6 KM cab ride but a whole world away.
Arillas appealed to us as a family because of all this. It appeals to us also as a couple who enjoy a romantic meal with a nice bottle of wine while watching the sunset and occasionally a stroll along the coast to the other beautiful beaches.
